Spring Clean Your Interview Wardrobe: Make a Lasting First Impression
By Sara Knoester (Owner, Mixed Staffing & Recruiting)
Spring is here, and it’s not just our closets and homes that could use a refresh. Let’s talk about spring cleaning your interview wardrobe! At Mixed Staffing, we know how crucial first impressions are—and we’re here to help you make the best one yet. Remember, you only get one chance to make a first impression!
Top tips for interview attire:
1. Start Fresh and Clean
To begin with, a successful interview day starts with feeling fresh. Taking a shower the morning of your interview sets you up with confidence and a polished look. In addition, pay close attention to your hands and nails; after all, one of the first things you’ll do in an interview is shake hands. Clean, well-groomed hands show attention to detail and convey professionalism. Finally, make sure your hair is neatly styled—whether it’s a fresh cut or a classic look, a clean appearance always leaves a great impression.
2. Be Mindful with Scents and Gum
Next, while a touch of cologne or perfume is fine, remember that moderation is key. Strong scents can distract or overwhelm, lingering in the room and potentially creating an unpleasant experience for the interviewer. Before heading inside, freshen your breath with a piece of gum or a mint. However, dispose of it discreetly before the interview begins. Keeping scents subtle and fresh shows you’re respectful and focused.
3. Dress to Match the Company Culture
Before choosing your outfit, take a few minutes to research the company’s dress code and culture. For example, is the company corporate and formal, like a law or accounting firm, or more relaxed, like a tech startup or construction firm? Aim to dress slightly above the everyday code to show you’re serious about the opportunity while staying aligned with the company culture. If the company has a “business casual” code, consider a sharp blazer and dress shoes. This approach shows you’ve done your homework and presents you as a great fit.
4. Focus on Comfort and Confidence
Your comfort directly affects your confidence. Therefore, choose an outfit that fits well and allows natural movement—avoid clothing that requires constant adjusting, like tight collars or restrictive jackets. When you’re comfortable, you’ll feel more at ease and able to focus entirely on the conversation. Try sitting, standing, and walking in your outfit to ensure it looks polished from every angle, allowing you to confidently present yourself.
5. Keep It Simple and Classic
When in doubt, stick to classic, understated options that convey professionalism without being distracting. Avoid flashy patterns or bold accessories that can shift focus away from your qualifications. If you have a unique personal style, save the bright colors or novelty socks for after you’ve landed the job. Instead, choose neutral tones or simple patterns that keep attention on you and your skills. Ultimately, a polished, timeless look will help make a memorable impression for all the right reasons.
We hope these tips help you feel prepared and confident for your next interview. By making a positive first impression, you’re setting yourself up for success—one clean slate at a time.
Good luck from all of us at Mixed Staffing!
